Surrey, BC… WORD-ARTS LIVE! presents Southern Exposure, Thursday, October 26, 7pm at Turnbull Gallery, Semiahmoo Arts. The evening salon features innovative word-artists (poetry, prose, theatre, music, multi-disciplinary) Heather Haley, Marion Quednau, Kempton Dexter, Taslim Jaffer and Jacques Lalonde.
“Word-Artists have a profound effect on societal change and the shaping of the cultural landscape. We assembled this group of multi-faceted presenters to engage with the Peninsula arts community,” says co-organizer Virginia Gillespie. “South Surrey is ripe for the kind of cross-pollination that Southern Exposure offers.
Who knows what might grow from the thought-provoking presentations, stimulating conversation and fun?”
Comic, actor, playwright, and master storyteller Jacques Lalonde will certainly deliver on the fun quotient. This is his 31st year in a row at The Vancouver Fringe, this year with the sold-out Draining the Swamp, a high flying musical about an orange skinned tyrant (Curious Creations). He has performed at almost every major festival in Vancouver from The Vancouver Storytelling Festival to Word on The Street to the Sechelt Festival of Written Arts.
Trailblazing poet Heather Haley pushes boundaries by creatively integrating disciplines, genres and media, from spoken word to videopoems. Author of poetry collections Sideways and Three Blocks West of Wonderland, her debut novel,
The Town Slut’s Daughter (2014), has received critical acclaim, described by the Vancouver Sun as “…a gut-wrenching depiction of the punk rock scene in
Vancouver during its heyday.”
Marion Quednau has won national awards for her fiction and poetry, from the Smithbooks-Books in Canada Award for her first novel, The Butterfly Chair (Random House, 1988) to her People’s Choice award as a Canada Writes finalist for poetry, 2012. Her writing for children, The Gift of Odin (Annick Press, 2007), was a top ten selection by the Ontario Library Association/Canadian Children’s Book Centre.
Kempton Dexter is a sculptor, writer and musician. He is a founding member of
The Grunt Gallery, has produced a number of his plays including A Short History of My Life as a Bear, Man Woman Buddy, and The Paint Crew. His collection of short stories Mrs. Ceperley’s Garden and Other Plots received wide praise. Performing as Hi-rise Dex, his fifth and most recent CD, titled Springtime in Vancouver
was released this year.
Surrey based writer, Taslim Jaffer teaches writing for healing, self-discovery and legacy through Semiahmoo Arts and Pandora's Collective. She also runs a lifestyle blog and writes for various print and digital publications. She is the new Wellness & Personal Growth section editor for The South Asian Buzz.
Southern Exposure is presented at the Turnbull Gallery, Semiahmoo Arts, 14601-20th Avenue, Surrey, BC. The event is free, but you must register at Eventbrite http://bit.ly/2hqAuGs. For more information contact vgplayroom@gmail.com or visit http://word-arts.weebly.com.
